ورغم أن العبقرية ذاتها ظاهرة إنسانية، إلا أن العقل الإنساني نفسه قد وقف طويلًا أمام هذه الظاهرة "الخارقة"، وقد حيره أمرها طويلًا، فراح يحاول إيجاد شتى التفسيرات لها، فنسبها إلى الظواهر الخارقة.
ورغم أن كل منا يملك كثيرًا من أسباب هذه الموهبة، إلا أنها تضيع من أكثرنا بسبب سوء التعليم وقصور التربية.
من هنا تأتي أهمية الدعوة إلى الاهتمام بالطفل الموهوب أو الشاب النابغ.
ونحاول في هذا الكتاب أن نقف على معنى العبقرية، وأن نوقف القارئ معنا على صفات العبقري والصلة التي تربط بين الشذوذ أو الخروج على المألوف وبين العبقرية، ومن ثم نحاول كذلك أن نرسم الملامح العامة للشخصية العبقرية والوسائل التي تعتمد عليها تلك الشخصية في إبراز خصائص تميزها ونبوغها.
ومن أهدافنا أيضًا أن نضع القارئ أمام مجموعة من الاختبارات الخاصة التي يمكنه بها أن يحدد قدراته ومواهبه الذاتية حتى يتمكن بعد ذلك من التقدم النفسي بخطى أسرع نحو اكتساب العبقرية؛ لأننا نؤمن بأن العبقرية من الأمور التي يمكن اكتسابها بتنمية المواهب والقدرات الخاصة للإنسان "الفرد"، ونؤمن أيضًا أن العبقرية ليست حكرًا على مجموعة من الناس دون غيرهم، وأن بإمكان أي إنسان أن يحقق تلك العبقرية فيما لو تعرف على نفسه ومواهبه وقدراته الحقيقية وحرص على تنمية تلك المواهب والقدرات في ضوء معرفته بالشروط اللازم تحققها في الشخصية العبقرية.
