التحليل السياسي، مثل مجالات الاستقصاء الأخرى، يولد مصطلحاته الخاصة به، إذ تتكرر كلمات جديدة وتمنح كلمات متداولة معاني فنية. لذا فإن اختيار مصطلحات التحليل السياسي هي أصعب مهمة في إعداد كتاب من هذا النوع، إن عملية النشاط السياسي تتأثر بكل مسألة تؤثر في الاهتمامات البشرية، كما أن علم السياسة مجال للاستقصاء انتقائى جداً في استعماله المصطلحات والأساليب والنظريات المستمدة من العلوم الاجتماعية الأخرى والعلوم الطبيعية ومن دراسة التاريخ والفلسفة والقانون ولا تحدد خطوط واضحة حدود علم السياسة أو مصطلحاته.
والمعجم الحديث الذي بين يدي القارئ يأتي في هذا الإطار فهو يحوي مجموعة من مصطلحات التحليل السياسي. والمعجم يحاول اختيار بعض هذه المصطلحات، أو يستبعد أخرى وفقاً للمبادئ الرئيسية التالية: المصطلحات المعروفة التي تم اختيارها هي تلك الموجودة في نص من علم السياسة وتضم هذه عموماً: مصطلحات البحث التجريبي والطرق التحليلية الرئيسة والنظريات التجريبية، تحليل النظم، والمصطلحات الأساسية لهذه الطرق والنظريات، والمصطلحات المستعملة في مناقشة المسائل الرئيسة في الفلسفة وطرق الاستقصاء. وتم التركيز بخاصة في المصطلحات التي تعد تعابير جديدة أو التي لها معانٍ أو تطبيقات في علم السياسة مختلفة عن معانيها في الاستعمال اليومي، وفي مفاهيم علم السياسة إلى دقة إضافية توجد دلالات خاصة أو قدى ينشأ خلاف شديد بشأن أهمية الصياغات المختلفة.
إن تطبيق هذه المعايير ينطوي على استثناء عدد من فئات معينة: لا توجد مداخل لسياسيين أو كتاب سياسيين ولا يذكر الأفراد إلا حينما تكون أسماؤهم عناوين لبعض مجموعات الأفكار، أو عندما ينبع عملهم من مصطلح ما أو يتأثر به. إلى جانب ذلك فإن هذا المعجم لم يحاول ضم مصطلحات تتعلق بخاصة بالنظرية السياسية المعيارية أو تاريخ الفكر السياسي، غير أن بعض هذه المصطلحات ترد أيضاً، لأسباب مختلفة، في علم السياسة الحديثة، فقد تضمنها المعجم.
أخيراً هناك مصطلحات كثيرة قد ترد في علم السياسة مستمدة من فروع أخرى أو أنها جزء من مصطلحات منهج معين أو أسلوب معين. إن المصطلحات من هذا القبيل لا تستعمل عموماً بلا تفسير مناسب إلا في النصوص المتخصصة والمتقدمة، لذا تم استثناء معظم المفاهيم الأساسية (الفلسفة Philosophy، الماركسية Marxism، وStatical Analysis التحليل الإحصائي).
