الأساطير هي أحلام البشر، غريبة بكل ما في الكلمة من معنى، ومألوفة بشكل آخذ لا ينسى. وتروي البدايات والنهايات، الخلق والدمار، والحياة والموت. كما تفسر تساؤلات كيف ولماذا المتعلقة بالحياة. واشتقت كلمة أسطورة (myth) من الكلمة اليونانية (muthos) التي تعني خرافة أو كلمة، وتشكل أساطير آلهة الألمبوس اليونانية مصدراً رئيساً للفن والأدب الغربي، وكنزاً دفيناً من القصص المصورة يمكن للفنانين والكتّاب جعلها نضرة جديدة ذات معنى حتى في أيامنا، بعد وقت قليل من تلاشي الإيمان بآلهة اليونان.
ولأهمية هذه الأساطير قام المؤلف "نيل فيليب" بجمع كتابه هذا الذي يضم فيه كماً من الأساطير العالمية، بما في ذلك مجموعة من أعظم الحكايات الكلاسيكية اليونانية والرومانية، والأساطير الاسكندنافية، والسلتية والمصرية والهند وأمريكية وأساطير سكان استراليا الأصليين، والأفريقية والتقاليد الآسيوية. ومما تجدر إشارته أن المؤلف قد أعاد رواية هذه الأساطير والحكايات بأسلوب شيّق سهل، مرتبط بالرسوم التوضيحية التي تمثل أحداث كل أسطورة. كما وعنى بوضع القصص في مجموعات وفق الموضوع، وذلك ليسهل على القارئ الوصول إلى الأسطورة التي يريد قراءتها.
