هذا الكتاب محاولة ممتازة لملء فجوةٍ في المكتبة العربية حول شخصية أندلسية - موريسكية عاشت في مرحلةٍ تاريخية حرجةٍ مؤذنةٍ بطيّ صفحة الفصل الأخير من الوجود الإسلامي على أرض الأندلس.
وهو يبني أكمل صورة ممكنة لأفوقاي حتى الآن، كمثقف أندلسي من طراز خاص، وتأتي الدراسة ثمرة بحث أدبي وتاريخي وعلمي موسع استند إلى أخباره وآثاره الباقية، وبعض الرسائل الشخصية والعامة التي حررَّها بيده.
وتكشف الدراسة عن طبيعة ثقافته التي ظهرت في أعماله من حيث مصادرها، ونشاطاته العلمية والجدلية، سواء في أثناء نشأته الأولى في إسبانيا، أو في رحلته إلى أوروبا، وفي مهجره الجديد بعد أن ترك إسبانيا، وتتناول أعماله العربية التي تعد تمثيلاً للنثر الموريسكي العربي، وثمرة للتعليم السري الذي تلقّاه الموريسكيون في القرن السادس عشر تحت حكم الإسبان بعد سقوط غرناطة.
المصدر الأول لبحوث الكتاب هو المختصر الباقي لرحلته المحقق والمنشور تحت عنوان "ناصر الدين على القوم الكافرين"، والترجمة العربية التي قام بها الحجري لكتاب في فن المدفعية جعل خاتمتها قطة من سيرته، وبجانبها بضعُ رسائل شخصية له ختمتُ بها الباحثة الكتاب في ملحقٍ خاص، وهي تكشف جانباً غير معروف كثيراً في تجارة المخطوطات الشرقية، التي نشط في سبيل جمعها المستشرقون إبان الربع الأول من القرن السابع عشر.
وقد بينت الباحثة منزلة أفوقاي في تاريخ الإستشراق، إعتماداً على مصادر محددة من أعماله توثق صِلاته بعدد من المستشرقين في مطلع القرن السابع عشر الذي يعد العصر الذهبي للإستشراق وللدراسات العربية في أوروبا.
وقد استحقت الباحثة عن جدارة جائزة ابن بطوطة للدراسات في أدب الرحلة.
