إن موضوع العلاقات الروسية - الأمريكية يعد واحداً من أهم موضوعات العلاقات الدولية في عالم اليوم، نظراً لما تمتلكه الدولتان من مقومات، وما تتسبب به من تداعيات على العالم قاطبة وبضمنه بالطبع منطقة الشرق الأوسط.
ومن بين موضوعات تلك العلاقات هو موضوعة التنافس السياسي - الإقتصادي بين الدولتين، بحكم أن كل من الدولتين لهما توجههما نحو منطقة الشرق الأوسط، ومن ثَمَّ فإن تنافسهما تجاه الشرق الأوسط من الممكن أن يؤشر لتطورات مهمة متعلقة بحاضر ومستقبل هذه المنطقة.
يعد موضوع التنافس بين القوى الكبرى واحداً من الموضوعات المهمة على الصعيدين السياسي والإقتصادي في عالم اليوم، وفي المستقبل، كونه يؤشر جانباً من صور العلاقات الدولية، الممتدة بين التكامل والحرب، مروراً بالتعاون والتنافس.
إن موضوعة البحث يؤشر علاقات بين دولتين كبريين بكل المقاييس العالمية للقوة، وهما الولايات المتحدة القوة العظمى في العالم، وروسيا الإتحادية الوريث الأكبر لقدرات الإتحاد السوفيتي وهي قوة نووية وتكنولوجية كبرى في العالم، ناهيك عن إمكاناتها الأخرى التي تتوافر عليها وأهمها قدراتها الإقتصادية وقدراتها في مجال الثروات الهيدروكاربونية ومنها النفط والغاز الطبيعي.
