"فلنمثل ستريندبرغ" مأخوذة عن مسرحية "رقصة الموت" للكاتب السويدي الشهير أوغوست ستريندبرغ (1849-1912). ومسرحية ستريندبرغ كتبت عام 1901 مجسدة روح العصر الفنية آنذاك وكتب دورينمات هذه المسرحية بعد أن رأت الوجود لأول مرة بسبعين سنة، وقد تسنى للناس خلال هذه الفترة أن يصبحوا شهوداً ومشاركين في عدة "رقصات موت" لا تقاس من ناحية الفظاعة والرعب بما كتبه ستريندربرغ..
وأبطال المسرحية أناس يدورون حول ذواتهم بحلقة مفرغة يعيشون في عالم صغير فظ يمثل بالنسبة لهم العالم الكبير، ليس الاغتراب مأساتهم وإنما الوضوح التام...
إنها "قصة حتى النهاية" كما يعبر دورينمات عادة عن طريقته في كتابة المسرحية، فهي ليست فضحاً للزواج البرجوازي كما يسفرها السطحيون، وإنما هي فضح لمجتمع بأكمله، تحتاج فيه أهم تطلعات الإنسان الخيرة إلى ما يبررها.
