هذا ليس كتاب تاريخ.. ولا كتاب آثار! أما إذا كنتَ مهتمًّا إلى هذه الدرجة بتصنيف ما تقرؤه من كتب، فيمكنني أن أريحك فأقول: إن هذا الكتاب يستلهم روح الخِطط، أو هذا ما أتمناه على الأقل! والخطط هي نوع من الكتابة يعنى أساسًا بالجغرافيا التاريخية، وببعض التجاوز يمكن أن نقول: إن موضوع الخِطط الأساسي هو تاريخ الأماكن.. فالخيط الدقيق الذي يجمع شتات الكتاب هو روح الأماكن وحياتها، فكُن واثقًا بأن بطل الكتاب الأوحد هو المكان، ولا شيء سوى المكان! فهو يتناول حكايات تاريخية كانت لها علاقة بأماكن داخل القاهرة، والحقيقة أنني لم أجد وصفًا أصدق ولا أدق للقاهرة من كونها «خريدة»، أي: لؤلؤة مكنونة، لا تبوح بكل أسرارها مهما بدا لك ذلك، وقاهرة اليوم بكل قسوتها وقبحها هي مدينة لا يُمكن أن نحملها على محمل الجد أبدًا، فدائمًا ما تُخفي في أعماقها خريدة مدهشة، تنتظر فقط من يصل إليها ويكشف عنها.
