أن أهمية الدلالة في اللغة هي العنصر الجوهري فيها وهي الغاية إذا كانت الألفاظ هي الوسيلة، والأمور بغاياتها، فعرفت الدلالة لغة "واصطلاحا"، وتطرقت إلى مجالات علم الدلالة، ثم دراسة أقسام الدلالة عند الأزهري، وأعني بذلك الحقيقة والمجاز، أو الدلالة الوضعية والدلالة الانتقالية، ثم دراسة المعاني الحقيقية للألفاظ، وكيفية انتقالها إلى معانٍ مجازية بسبب الشبه بين المعنيين، أو بسبب تسمية الشيء باسم غيره إذا كان معه، أو من سببه، ودرس الفصل العام والخاص بوصفهما شكلاً من أشكال تغير المعنى وانتقال الدلالة إذ يتم ذلك عن طريقين لا ثالث لهما : الأول تعميم الدلالة أو توسيعها، والثاني تضييق المعنى وتخصيصه، ودرس العلاقة بين الألفاظ ودلالاتها والعلاقات الدلالية تتمثل في الترادف أو التضاد أو الاشتراك اللفظي . وقد تعرضت إلى أسباب حدوث كل من هذه العلاقات وآراء اللغويين القدامى والمحدثين في وقوعها في اللغة.
