في كتابه هذا يتناول الشيخ ليث العتابي ( الشبهة ) من حيث الحقيقة والأسس ، وكيفية الرد عليها ، فيبدأ عمله وفق خطة علمية منمهجية تبدأ بتعريف الشبهة في اللغة والإصطلاح ، والبحث في البديهيات والمسلمات ، وبيان الفرق بين الإسقاط والإلتقاء ، ويقدم مقياساً للشبهات ، ومقياسه هو وفق نوع الرد ، وهي ثلاثة شبهات : 1- الشبهات التي فيها تعرض لشخص ، أو مؤسسة ، و2- الشبهات التي يرد عليها بأسلوب النقص والإبرام ، وهي الشبهات التي تثير العداوة تجاه جهة ما ، أو دين ما ، أو مذهب ما ، و3- الشبهات التي يجب التصدي لها بقوة وسرعة ، وهي الشبهات التي تمس الإعتقاد .. من هنا يؤكد المؤلف على ضرورة معرفة الشبهات ، وإنها شبهات حقيقية ، ثم معرفة نوعها ، ومقياسها ، بقصد التعامل معها وفق ذلك المقياس .
وفي هذا الإطار يبحث المؤلف في سبب كثرة الشبهات وقلة الردود ، وعوامل نشوء الشبهات كما يبحث في الأسس التي اعتمد عليها المستشرقون في قراءة ونقد التراث العربي الإسلامي ، وأسباب ودوافع الهجمة على الإسلام ونبيه الأكرم صلى الله عليه وسلم ومنها الهجمة على القرآن الكريم ، وإثارة الشبهات على التشيع ، وأسباب إثارة الشبهات على كتاب نهج البلاغة .
هذا الكتاب ، إضافة مهمة للمكتبة الإسلامية يؤكد أن الشبهات ليست كلها على مستوى واحد ، وليس لها مقياس واحد ، ولا يمكن اتخاذ طريقة رد واحدة في التصدي لكل الشبهات .
