هنري جورج فارمر مستشرق موسيقي، وجه جهده كله لدراسة الموسيقى الشرقية عامة ، والعربية خاصة وقد أثمرت هذه الدراسة عدة كتب ومقالات تعالج الجوانب المختلفة من الموسيقى العربية فحقق بعض الآثار العربية ، وترجم بعضها وتتبع تطور الموسيى العربية ووصف الآلات الموسيقية العربية ومتى استعملها العرب، وتأثير الموسيقى العربية في الغرب.. وغير ذلك. وهذا الكتاب من أحدث كتب هذا المؤلف ، فقد ألفه عام 1940 وإن كان قد أتم محاولة صغيرة شبيهة به من قبل ، حين وصف المخطوطات الموسيقية العربية في مكتبة بودليان. فهو إذن ثمرة دراسات طويلة وجدية ، قضايا هذا المؤلف باحثا عن كل ما يتصل بهذا الفن الذي يعنى به. وقد ظهر أثر ذلك فيه ، فهو حاو شامل ، لا يشعر المرء فيه بنقص. وهدف هذا الكتاب ذكر ثبت كامل للكتب والرسائل التى ألفها العرب عن الموسيقى وقد بحث عن مواد هذا الثبت في فهارس الكتبات المختلفة ومتون الكتب الموسيقية والأدبية. وذكر كل ما وجده منسوبا إلى كاتبه إن كان قد وصل إلى علمه . وأشار إلى ضياع ما ضاع منها والمصدر الذي ذكره . أما ما لايزال موجودا ، فقد ذكر المواضع التى يوجد فيها، وهل طبع أو لم يطبع ، وسنى طبعه أو نسخه ، وترجماته إلى اللغات غير العربية إن كان قد ترجم، وقيمة كل ذلك فهو كتاب يضم مكتبة، هى " المكتبة الموسيقية العربية" وهذا اللون من الكتب له أهميتهوهذا اللون من الكتب له أهمية الكبيرة ، إذ أنه الخطوة الأولى التى لابد منها قبل القيام بأية دراسة في أي فن أو علم، وبغيرها لاتكون الدراسة مستندة إلى دعامة متينة ، ولا مكتملة الجوانب.
