تناول الكتاب بالبحث أصالة الفكر الفلسفي ومجموعة من الرسائل الفلسفية الرمزية لدى الشيخ الرئيس ابن سينا، يهدف من ورائها بيان مذهبه في العقل والنفس فيسلك مسلك الرمز.
ولعل أروع تصوير رمزي لحال النفس ما ذكره الفيلسوف الشيخ الرئيس ابن سينا في "قصيدته العينية"، فهي تصور هبوط النفس إلى هذا العالم كهبوط الورقاء، ثم وصولها إليه على كره، ثم إستئناسها به ونسيانها عهودها، ثم حنينها إلى العالم العلوي، ورجوعها إليه بعد الموت.
أما "رسالة العشق"، فالتكوين عنده فيها يرتبط بعملية المعرفة الصاعدة فبين فيها أن العشق عام في الوجود.
أما قصة "حي بن يقظان" لإبن سينا، نشهد فيها إرتقاء النفس من عالم العناصر وإجتيازها عالم الطبيعة والنفوس والعقول حتى بلوغها عرش الواحد القديم.
أما "رسالة الطير" نشهد فيها وقوع النفس الإنسانية في قفص الطبيعة وإستناسها به، ثم خلاصها من الشرك، وإغتنامها النجاة، وصعودها في أجواء الفضاء من صقع إلى صقع، حتى بلوغ المدينة التي يتبوؤها الملك الأعظم.
وأخيراً قصة "سلامان وأبسال" فإننا نشهد فيها محاربة النفس الناطقة وإنجذابها إلى عالم العقل.
