لا يوجد هناك عرض مسرحي يشبه الأوبرا وخصوصاً عندما تشاهدها لأول مرة على المسرح. يلهم المغنون الجمهور ليبكوا أو يبتهجوا. في بعض الأحيان تضم الأوبرا رقصات بالية يتقاسم الراقصون بعضهم مع عربات أو حتى مع حيوانات حية. خلف المشاهد هناك أشخاص خفيون. المئات أحياناً. يعملون لتحويل المسرح إلى أماكن غريبة مثل مصر القديمة أو إيطاليا في عصر النهضة، أو اليابان في عهد الإمبراطورية، أو حتى مملكة الجنيات. فهم يصورن مشاهد لا تصدق عن كوارث عدة من غرق السفن إلى الإنفجارات إلى مشاهد المعارك. والألعاب النارية المثيرة، والضباب الغامض، أو المطر الحزين، وتساقط الثلج الهادئ وعن أي مؤثرات خاصة أخرى يمكن تصورها.
