ينتمي هذا الكتاب إلى حقل بحثي يسمى "الأركيولوجية الدينية أو علم الآثار الديني" وهو ما تحتاجه الدراسات الدينية المعاصرة في قراءة النصوص الدينية المقدسة وفهمها وهو ما فعله "أنطوان فيسل" وما ينطوي عليه عنوان كتابه "التوراة، الإنجيل، والقرآن: ثلاثة كتب، مدينتان، وقصة واحدة" على رسالة. يقول المؤلف "سوف أحاول في متن هذا الكتاب أن أبيّن إلى أي مدى تشكل الكتب الثلاثة قصة واحدة، وما هو المسلك الذي يخترقها عبر الرسالة النبوية النقدية، التي ليست في المقام الأخير، رسالة إجتماعية – نقدية. ويربط الكتب الثلاثة، إن مرادي من هذا العمل هو أن أُظهر مدى أهمية هذه القصة الواحدة بالنسبة إلى اليهود، والمسيحيين، والمسلمين جميعاً، وبذلك لكافة شعوب العالم اليوم".
أما من حيث (المخطط العام) للكتاب، فهو يبدأ من "قصة مدينتين" في التاريخ، وكيف تكلم المؤرخون، والكتّاب، والشعراء على التناقضات والصراعات بين المملكتين. ثم ينظر المؤلف بعد ذلك كيف ينبغي فهم دعوة محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم كنبي من حيث علاقتها بدعوات أنبياء التوراة الآخرين ... وكيف تتعامل الكتب الثلاثة مع مسائل العنف، والجزاء، والحرب المقدسة، والجهاد. ولِمَ أُهلكت مدن الظلم والشر كسدوم وعمورة؟ هل يتصل هلاكها باللواط أم أن ثمة شيئاً آخر كان يحدق فيها؟ كما تناقش فصول الكتاب شخصيات تحولت إلى أساطير ورموز من أمثال يأجوج ومأجوج، و "ذي القرنين" الإسكندر الكبير، وكيف فسر المسيحيون والمسلمون على مدى التاريخ قصصهم عن المدينتين (القدس، والمدينة المنورة) وأخيراً كيف يجب أن تفهم قصة المدينتين هذه وفقاً للكتب الثلاثة معاً؟ ولمن سيكتب النصر في النهاية؟.
