وقد ساهمت السياسة والدين والعلم والفلسفة في التحولات والإنعطافات الحاصلة في التاريخ، لكنها تظلّ مؤثرة، عندما تمتلك القبيلة أو الأمة أو المملكة جيشاً قوياً يستطيع أن يحسم المعارك لصالحها ويضمن ديمومة أسلوب حياتها.
يجب ألا نقللّ من أهمية الحروب المصيرية، لأن البلدان التي تكسب المعارك تكسب الحروب في الآخر، فالمنتصرون يزدهرون ويحتفظون بسيطرتهم على أراضيهم، ويسيطرون أيضاً على جيرانهم، بينما يجد المنهزمون أنفسهم مستعبدين أو ميادين وتدمّر حياتهم ومجتمعاتهم، تؤثر المعارك في إنتشار الثقافة والحضارة والعقيدة الدينية، فهي تكشف عن الأسلحة والأساليب العسكرية الجديدة والقادة الذين يؤثّرون على النزاعات المستقبلية ويحدّدون نتائجها، وبعض المعارك مؤثرة، ليس بسبب نتائجها المباشرة، بل بسبب تأثير دعايتها على الرأي العام.
