اتفق العلماء قديماً وحديثاً على مكانة صحيح الإمام مسلم بن الحجاج، وتناوله الدارسون كي يستنبطوا شروطه التي على أساسها اختار مسلم أحاديثه، كما استهدف الكتاب للنقد، وأثيرت حوله بعض الشبه قديماً وحديثاً ورغم ذلك ذهب بعض العلماء إلى تقديمه على صحيح البخاري، كعلماء المغرب، وسبقهم إلى ذلك بعض المشارقة مثل الإمامين أبي حاتم وأبي زراعة الرازنيين، وأبي علي النيسابوري، وقال بذلك بعض الباحثين المحدثين مثل فؤاد سزكين وغيره، وكان من مظاهر عناية العلماء والدارسين به أن قامت عليه شروح كثيرة.
وكان من أهم الشروح التي قامت على الكتاب؛ شرح الإمام محي الدين بن شرف بن زكريا النووي ت 676 هـ والذي أسماه: المنهاج في شرح صحيح مسلم بن الحجاج، وبعد رحلة طويلة من هذا الشرح انتظم هذا البحث في مقدمة وخمسة فصول وخاتمة عرضت في المقدمة لأهمية الموضوع وسبب اختياره وخطته ومنهج بحثه، (أما الفصل الأول: فقد جعلته ترجمة غير تقليدية للإمام النووي، وأما الفصل الثاني: فكان بعنوان: كتاب المنهاج شرح صحيح مسلم بن الحجاج ، أما الفصل الثالث: فكان بعنوان: الأدوات الحديثية في شرح المعاني وتوليد وتوسيع الدلالة في الكتاب، أما الفصل الرابع فقد جعلته بعنوان "النووي الناقد").
