في ظل التغيرات المعاصرة اتجهت أنظار علماء الاجتماع إلى المجتمع العالمي باعتباره أصبح يمثل وحدة للتحليل في الدراسات السوسيولوجية المعاصرة وبالتالي أصبح التركيز على تناول التفاعل بين الأوضاع الداخلية مع غيرها الخارجية يعد مطلباً هاماً في التحليل والتفسير، وبخاصة في الدراسات السوسيواقتصادية.
وفي ضوء ما سبق من مظاهر عديدة للتغير جاءت هذه المحاولة المتواضعة التي بين أيدينا لتعالج بعض القضايا الحديثة والمعاصرة التي ظهرت في إطار الاهتمامات الحديثة لعلم الاجتماع الاقتصادي ومن هنا لا نزعم بأن هذا الكتاب يحتوي على معالجة لكل القضايا المعاصرة بل مازالت هناك قضايا أخرى تحتاج إلى مزيد من البحث، ومحاولة إزالة ما يكتنفها من غموض نأمل في استكمالها مستقبلاً.
وينقسم هذا الكتاب إلى ثلاثة أبواب يحتوي كل باب على عدة فصول. عالج الباب الأول مفهوم علم الاجتماع الاقتصادي ومجالات إهتمامه التقليدية وغيرها المعاصرة منها التجارة الإلكترونية، وبنوك المعلومات...الخ.
كما ركز الباب الثاني على تناول قضية هامة إنشغل بها فرع جديد في علم الاجتماع يطلق عليها "سوسيولوجيا الاستهلاك" حيث عالج قضية الاستهلاك من وجهة نظر سوسيولوجية من خلال ربطها بمكونات البناء الاجتماعي للمجتمع فضلاً عن تناول أهميتها ومحدداتها الاجتماعية والثقافية والدينية.
وأخيراً، إهتم الباب الثالث بمناقشة التحولات الاقتصادية والسياسية والتكنولوجية التي يشهدها العالم المعاصر، وجسدتها ظاهرة "العولمة" مع التركيز بصفة خاصة على مظاهرها الاقتصادية والتكنولوجية. واتضح ذلك في الاهتمام بمناقشة قضية عولمة الأسواق المعاصرة، وما حدث من تغير في وظائفها وتنوع في أشكالها، من خلال رؤية سوسيولوجية ركزت على تناول ملامح التغيرات التي طرأت على عولمة الأسواق والاقتصاد، وما صاحب ذلك من آثار إيجابية وسلبية انعكست على أسواق واقتصاديات المجتمعات النامية عامة، والعربية خاصة.
