شغل عدد كبير من الباحثين بالتراث اللغوى العربي ولا شك أن ثمة صعوبات كبيرة تواجه من يتصدى للحديث عن مظاهر هذا التراث، وتمثل ذلك فى اكتفاء فريق بالعرض والرشح، وتجشم فريق آخر عناء المواجهة، تتجاوز ذلك إلى الدرس النقدى الذى لا يقنع بظواهر الأشياء بل يغوص إلى أعماقها ليكشف عن أوجه التفرد أو القصور. ومن ثم لم يكن من المعقول أن اركن إلى نهج واحد، وآثرت أن أجمع بينهما ما أمكننى ذلك للإفادة من فوائد الجمع بين النهجين معاً. ولما كان من المستحيل أن أتناول ذلك الكم الضخم من الترث اللغوى، فخلت أنه من المنطقى أن أبدأ بألوان مختلفة من التأليف اللغوى هكذا يتحدد بوضوح هدفى من هذا العمل، إذ إننى قصدت إلى درس ألوان من التأليف اللغوى، حتى يتعرف القارئ على ذلك الجهد الذى بذله اللغويون العرب، ويقف على مقدرته ووعيهم بتلك اللغة وحرصهم على الحفاظ عليها وإيصالها إلى الأجيال التالية.
