إن ضوء القمر المنعكس على الرخام جعل المدينة تسبح في نور ساطع بدرجة تكفي لأي ترزي أن يلضم الخيط في إبرته دون حاجة لمصباح، هكذا قال أحد جنود عمرو بن العاص عن الإسكندرية التي كانت عاصمة للإمبراطورية العظمى كما كانت المركز الثقافي والإجتماعي للعالم الهللينستي، لم يعد الآن من الإسكندرية العظيمة سوى العمود المعروف بعمود "بومبي" وختفى كل شئ آخر، عن ذلك العصر الذهبي للإسكنرية يضع المؤلف هذا الكتاب المهم الذي يؤرخ للإسكندرية خلال العصر البلطمي ويرتحل بنا في أحيائها ومناراتها ومعابدها، ويختم المؤلف كتابه بملحق عن الموت على الطريقة السكندرية يؤكد فيه أن المدافن أكثر عدداً وأصدق إفصاحاً من أي نصب تذكارية حية، لذا ظلت آثار المدافن حية اغطي فترة حياة المدينة منذ إنشائها حتى الفتح العربي، وملحق آخر عن طبوغرافية الإسكندرية البطلمية وعلاقتها بالمدينة الحديثة.
