لم تكن حملة نابليون على مصر إلا عملاً استعمارياً هدف إلى إخضاع المصريين ومسخ عقيدتهم وتفكيك وحدتهم الوطنية ولم تكن هذه الحملة كما يرى البعض أنها لعبت دوراً في نهضة مصر، وإنها بذرت بذور البعث الحضاري المنشود ووضعت أسس الدولة الحديثة. لقد سعى الفرنسيون إلى تصفية الشخصية المصرية والقضاء عليها وقد أدركوا أن الأزهر كما يمثل ذات الأمة وتراثها فعمدوا إلى امتهان الأزهر فوطأته خيولهم بعدما قاد مقاومة على جميع المستويات وانتهى المر بإغراق الأزهر وتسمير أبوابه وعمل الفرنسيون جاهدين على قطع صلة الأزهر بمن حوله ليصبح رمزاً للتخلف ومثاراً للسخرية.
إن مؤلف هذا الكتاب صاحب رؤية تاريخية خاصة حاول أن يبني هنا أبعاد الحملة الفرنسية، فيما أطلق عليه اللقاء الأول بيننا وبين الغرب المتقدم وأبعاد المقاومة التي شنها المصريون ضد المحتلين. وهو على عكس من ينظر للدور الحضاري الذي لعبه الفرنسيون في مصر يؤكد أن بذور البعث الحضاري كانت موجودة في طيات المقاومة وفي صفحات هذا الرفض للوجود الحضاري. وقد ألقى الضوء على أعمال التنكيل الوحشية التي ارتكبها الجيش الفرنسي بحق المصريين وكيف تم استغلال الانقسامات الدينية في الشرق مع بدايات هذه الحملة على مصر وعرض لموقف الجبرتي من الحملة الفرنسية وكشف حقيقة ما يقال من أن الحملة الفرنسية أطلقت حرية المرأة. كما ركز على تنفيذ ما جاء في كتاب (بونابرت مصر) لكريستوفر هيرولد. وغير ذلك من الكتب.
