ليست هذه كلمة عن طه حسين، فقد كان الحديث عنه مهمة من توفروا على ذلك على مدى يومين كاملين فى المؤتمر الذي تسجل الصفحات التالية ما دار به، وهم من صفوة القادرين على التحديث عن هذا الرائد العظيم وعن حياته وفكره وتوجهاته. ولكني أقدم فى هذه الكلمة للمناسبة التى دعتنا، كما دعت غيرنا ولا تزال تدعوهم، للأحتفال بهذه الشخصية تظهر ثم لا تلبث أن تختفي برحيل أصحابها أو بمرور الظروف الذي دفع بها إلى السطح.
والمناسبة التى نحن بصددها تطرح علينا أمرين يحسنبنا، بل أجد لزاما علينا، أن نتذكرهما دائماً، إذا كان لمجتمعنا ألا يفقد صلته بهويته وأن يظل واعيا بها وبمسار تطورها حتى لا يندثر كيانه أو يضيع فى الزحام. وأحد هذين الأمرين هو أن الفترة التى شهدت ظهور طه حسين وإنجازاته لأم تكن مجرد امتداد زمنى بلاد ملامح، يستمد وجوده من كونه استمرار لوقت سابق أو إرهاصا لوقت لاحق. وإنما شكلت تلك الفترة منعطفا تاريخيا تكوينيا فى حياة المجتمع المصري. والأمر الثانى أننا فى ظل هذه الفترة أشد احتايجاً للتركيز على هويتنا.
