لقد أتم الله نعمته على المسلمين وأكمل لهم دينهم ورضي لهم الإسلام ديناً، وصانه عن انتحال المبطلين وافتراءات المارقين وظلالات المنحرفين الغالين، وقد تتبع مؤلف هذا الكتاب أحوال السادة المحدثين وأخبارهم وما يتعلق منها بالحفظ والمذاكرة كما عرض لموضوع السنة وإن كانت مشمولة بالحفظ الإلهي أم لا، وكيفية حفظها وطرق ضبطها.
إذ يعتقد البعض أن السنة غير مشمولة بحفظ الله عز وجل. وقد اخرج كتابه هذا في قسمين، تناول في القسم الأول معنى الحفظ، وشروط الحافظ عند المحدثين، وما اشترط في رجال الصحيح من الحفظ، وأفرد فصلاً للحديث عن الحفظ الإلهى للذكر الحكيم، وفي حفظ الله السنة وأدلة ذلك، كما تحدث عن تهيئة الله عز وجل هذه الأمة للتشرف بحفظ السنة وتبليغها للناس، وأورد الشعبة التي يستدل بها المعترض، وخصص المؤلف فصلاً للمنهجية في الطلب والتحديث استقاها من سير الحفاظ والمحدثين تعين على الحفظ وترشد إلى مقوماته، كما رسم منهجية أخرى في تدوين السنة وكتابتها.
أما القسم الثاني فقدم فيه صفحات من حفظ العلماء وطرقاً من مذكراتهم، فذكر من اكتفى بسمعة واحدة أو نظرة واحدة فحفظ كما ذكر من غلب الحديث على عقله وذهب بلبه وتفكيره.
