برع العرب في فنون عديدة ساعدهم على ذلك اتساع رقعة دولتهم واحتكاكهم بالأمم الأخرى التي أخذوا عنها فأضافوا لما أخذوا ولقحوا كما طرقوا أبواباً جديدة لم تكن معروفة عند سابقيهم. وقد عنى المؤلفون العرب بموضوع التعريف بالبلدان والأقطار وأخبارها ووصفها ومواقعها وقد بلغوا في ذلك الغاية.
وكتاب الروض المعطار في خبر الأقطار يتدرج ضمن هذا الجهد إذ عمد مؤلفه محمد بن عبد المنعم الحميري، أبو عبد الله إلى وضعه لهذه الغاية وقد التزم خطة سار عليها في كتابه فجعل المعجم على حروف المعجم، واكتفى بذكر الأماكن المشهورة أو الأماكن التي اتصلت بها قصة أو حكمة أو غير ذلك مما يستجوب ذكره. كما لم يلتفت إلى ذكر الأماكن المعمورة أو غير المشهورة ورغم أنه أراد لمعجمه أن يكون معجماً جغرافياً تاريخياً فإنه تعمد الإيجاز في مواضيع عديدة.
وقد اعتمد المحقق في عمله على نسختين، نسخة مكتبة بيرم باشا التابعة لنور عثمانية، ونسخة حديث رمز لها بالحرف ص كانت في ملك الشيخ محمد نصيف بجده وبالاعتماد على هاتين النسختين أقام المحقق نصاً سليماً مستعيناً بالمصادر الجغرافية التي نقل عنها المؤلف. واقتصد في إيراد الهوامش والحواشي كما عمد إلى تقسيم الفقرات في المادة الواحدة. إضافة إلى ذلك فإنه وثق ما ورد في الحواشي من أسماء مقارناً إياها بما ورد في المصادر الأخرى. وأخيراً زود المعجم بفهارس عامة للأماكن والأعلام والقبائل والأمم والكتب المذكورة في المتن والقوافي ذاكراً الصفحات التي وقعت فيها.
