قال الإمام, "جمال الدين أبو الفرج عبد الرحمن بن علي الجوزي" فإني رأيت العمر بضاعة للآدمي, فعجبت من تفريط الناس فيه, كأنهم ماعلموا أن الدنيا ميدان شقاق, وأن غاية العمر الغاية, إلا أن التفاضل في السباق على مقدار الهمِّ, وتفاوت الهمم على قدر الإيمان بالآخرة, فمن صدق يقينه جدّ, ومن تيقن طول الطريق استعد, ومن قلت معرفته تثبط, ومن لم يعرف المقصود تخبط. وقد رتبت هذا الكتاب على ثلاثة أبواب: الباب الأول: في بيان شرف العمر والحث على اغتنامه في الخير. الباب الثاني: في ذكر من كان يبادر العمر ويبالغ في حفظ لحظاته. الباب الثالث: في ذكر سبب تضييع العمر.
