تحت عنوان "الأمثال الشعبية من أفواه البرية" يقدم الدكتور بدر الدين عبيد مجموعة مختارة من الأمثال العامة عند العرب، قدم لها بمقدمة عن أهمية ومكانة الأمثال عند الشعوب في حياتهم اليومية بما فيها الأقوال المأثورة والحكم والأحاديث التي وردت في الكتب المقدسة، ومصادر أخرى.
يقول المؤلف: "لقد شرعت منذ أعوام بعيدة في جمع الأمثال وتسجيلها في سجل خاص اتخذته خصيصاً لهذا الغرض، رتبتها بحسب مواضيعها المتماثلة ونقائصها (كالنباهة والذكاء والفطنة) - البلادة والغباء إلخ) أو (القوة والبسالة والشجاعة) - و(الجبن والضعف والخوف) - أو (الجود والكرم والسخاء) - و(البخل والخسة... إلخ) أو (السلامة والصبر والتأني) - و(السرعة والتهور والندامة)... هذا في الجزء الأول من الكتاب.
اما في الجزء الثاني فقد أفرد المؤلف نماذجاً لأصل بعد الأمثال وكذلك أمثال "أجناس وشطور مرت مسرى أمثال: مثل: (رب كلام يستشار به الحرب... وما الكف إلا أصبعا ثم إصبع) أو (من بريء من الشر نال الخير - من بري من العار نال الشرف) ومثال متشابهة بين العربية والأجنبية مثل: (لا يفل الحديد إلا الحديد - إن الحديد بالحديد يفل) و(المعدة مفتاح القلب... المعدة هي الطريق للقلب)، وأخيراً مجموعة من الأمثال الأجنبية، وقد بلغ مجموع الأمثال التي احتواها هذا الكتاب حوالي (3800) مثل.
