"التفكير العلمى"، "الأسلوب العلمى فى التفكير"، "التفكير المنطقى"، "اتخاذ القرار"؛ هذه كلها وكأنها تصف وظائف علم الإحصاء كما يقدمه هذا الكتاب. والذى يأخذ بيد القارئ أو الدارس منذ أن يبدأ بمقولة لفظية، ثم يحولها إلى عبارة رياضية قابلة للاختبار واتخاذ قرار بشأنها، أى مقبولة أو غير مقبولة، أو غير ذلك. ويجرى هذا فى إطار احتمالى يبين احتمال الخطأ- أو الصواب- فى القرار المتخذ. هذا التسلسل إجراء يتطلب المعرفة بأسس نظرية وتطبيقية يعرضها المؤلف بصورة سلسة ومتدرجة. وفى علوم تطبيقية مثل الزراعة، الطب، الهندسة، السلوكيات... وغيرها، كثيرا ما يتطلب استخراج معلومات تستلزم إجراء تجارب حقلية أو إكلينيكية أو على المنتجات الصناعية... الخ. ويخضع تصميم مثل هذه التجارب إلى قواعد وأسس لازمة حتى يتسنى للمجرب استخلاص المعلومات الأكثر سلامة. وترتكز هذه الأسس والقواعد على نظرية الاحتمال ونظرية الخطأ بجانب الإجراءات الحسابية الأخرى. وهذا الكتاب هو خير عون لإرشاد المجرب منذ ان يبدأ التفكير فى إجراء تجربته حتى استخلاص النتائج منها. قام بتأليف هذا الكتاب مجموعة من أستاذة الجامعة ذوى الخبرة العريضة المحلية والدولية فى تدريس هذا الفرع من العلوم وهم أيضا لهم باع طويل فى تقديم الاستشارات الإحصائية للباحثين فى العلوم البيولوجية. ويعتبر هذا الكتاب سند قوى لدارسى الإحصاء والمجربين ولاسيما فى العلوم الحيوية-فهو يعتبر بشموله ورصانته مرجعا هاما فى المكتبة العربية.
