المسرح حضارة ورسالة إنسانية تبحث في التوجيه الاجتماعي والأخلاقي والقومي والوطني، منذ بدايات القرن العشرين كان للمسرح بدير الزور بدايات خجولة، قام بها عدد من الشباب المتنورين بأماكن لا تتعدى الحارات والأماكن المكشوفة، ولأوقات لا تتجاوز بضع دقائق، للتعبير عن حالة اجتماعية أو دينية، وغالباً ما كان الهزل والإمتاع غايتها. لم يشجع العثمانيون الحركة المسرحية الوليدة في دير الزور، بل حاربوها بشدة، لأنها بنظرهم تحث الناس على التمرد، وتبيان مساوىء الحكم من خلال المشاهد الهزلية، وأمام هذه المواجهة الساخنة شعر الكتاب والممثلون يقيناً بأهمية نمو المسرح وتطويره ودوره الراشد في توجيه الشعب، وشحن عواطفهم، فازداد اهتمامهم بمعالجة عدد كبير من المسرحيات المصرية واللبنانية، وهيأوا أنفسهم للانطلاق ببعضها، لكن محاولاتهم باءت بالفشل، بسبب الرقابة المحكمة على كل كاتب وممثل وهاوٍ.
محمد رشيد بن عبد الله الحمد الرويلي. من مواليد دير الزور 1947، إجازة في الآداب- قسم اللغة العربية 1972. عمل مدرساً لمادة اللغة العربية، ومديراً لكبرى ثانويات ومعاهد مدينة دير الزور ومديراً لتحرير صحيفة الفرات الأسبوعية، وموجهاً اختصاصياً لمادة اللغة العربية في دير الزور وصنعاء. رئيس فرع اتحاد الكتاب العرب بدير الزور منذ عام 1993 ولا يزال. أهم مؤلفاته: الرباط الواهي، هدباء، المعادة، ليل الظهيرة، الوصية، الخلوج، وغيرها الكثير.
