كانت مصر من بين فتوح الدولة العثمانية أعظمها وأيسرها، ففى مرج دابق غنم بنو عثمان تراث الدولة الإسلامية الذى تكدس فى الشام ومصر على مدى تسعة قرون وسحقوا دولة سلاطين الزاهرة وهى ماتزال تحتفظ بكثير من سالف بأسها وبهائها وانتزعوا رسوم الخلافة العباسية بعدما اتشحت بها مصر عصوراً طويلة وكان مصير مصر يضطرب فى كفة القدر قبل ذلك بأكثر من قرن ومن المحقق أنها قبلة لأطماع بنى عثمان منذ اشتد ساعدهم ونما سلطانهم وأشرفوا من هضابهم على حدود مصر الشمالية وهى يومئذ قاصية الشام.
والسلطان قايتباى المحمودى الأشرفى (815 هـ- 901 هـ) سلطان الديار المصرية من ملوك الجراكسة كان متقشفاً له اشتغال بالعلم كثير المطالعة فيه نزعة صوفية شجاعًا مهيبًا عاقلا حكيمًا أبقى كثيرًا من آثار العمران فى مصر والحجاز والشام لايزال بعضها إلى الآن.
