بدأ هذا الكتاب بشرح موجز لأهم المدارس الفقهية الإسلامية يبين وسائل التحديث التي تملكها، ثم يقوم بإستعراض تاريخ للعنف داخل الإسلام وخارجه ليستنتج أن العنف ليس مقتصراً على الإسلام والمسلمين فقط، بل إن شعوباً متعددة مارسته ولا تزال، ليصل إلى نتيجة مفادها أنه من الممكن الخروج من دائرة العنف التي نعيش فيها من خلال إعادة النظر بمقاصد الشريعة بما يتلاءم مع حاجاتنا وصولاً إلى تحديث وسائل إستنباط الأحكام الشرعية.
ثم بعد ذلك تطرق إلى بعض الأحكام الخاصة بالمرأة ليبين من خلال التحليل المنطقي ومن خلال مقاصد الشريعة، أنه من الممكن تحديث الأحكام الخاصة بالنساء بشكل يكون أكثر موافقة لأوضاعهن المستجدة في أيامنا الحالية.
