تنحدر كلمة(Calendar) الدارجة كاسم للتقويم من كلمة فينيقية تعني يوم الاستحقاق لدفع السندات أو الديون أو الالتزامات المالية. ولقد تعددت أسباب وحاجات الإنسان لأغراض دينية ومدنية ومعيشية حضارية. التقويم المستخدم اليوم عالمياً يدعى ( التقويم الغريغوري) نسبة للبابا غريغوري الثالث عشر الذي وافق على تعميمه في العالم المسيحي في القرن السادس عشر ميلادي.
وما يقدمه المؤلف في هذا الكتاب ما هو إلا دراسة يناقش فيها مختلف أنواع التقاويم الهامة وأنظمتها سواء ما ظهر واستخدم منها قبل التاريخ أو بعده في مشارق الأرض ومغاربها، وعلى مختلف قارات الأرض بمن عليها من الأمم بعروقها وعاداتها وتقاليدها وأديانها. ولتسهيل اضطلاع القارئ على مضمون الدراسة فقد عينت المؤلفة بتقسيمها إلى فصول عدى عرضت فيها لما يلي: أولاً التقاويم البدائية، ثانياً: التقويم الغربي ( التقويم الروماني، التقويم الجولياني)، التقويم الغريغوري، التقاويم الدائمة). ثالثاً: التقويم الصيني، رابعاً: التقويم المصري (الفرعوني)، خامساً التقويم الهندوسي، سادساً: التقويم البابلية والآشورية، سابعاً: التقويم العبري، ثامناً التقويم اليوناني، تاسعاً: تقاويم أمريكا الوسطى، عاشراً: التقويم الهجري الإسلامي (التقويم العربي قبل الإسلام، تقويم المسلمين).
إلى جانب هذه الأقسام ألحقت المؤلفة دراستها بعدد من الملاحق والتوضيحات التي تجيب فيها على الأسئلة التالية ما هو الشهر النسىء والحجج الأكبر، ما هي الأرض، وما هو القر، ما هي الشمس، هل في الشعر العربي القديم (الجاهلي) ما يدل على أن السنة العربية كانت سنة موسمية حولية ولم تكن سنة تدور أشهرها على مواسم السنة دون أن تستقر على موسم؟
