إن الكتاب يتناول تطور عواصم مصر الإسلامية منذ فتح عمرو بن العاص لمصر عام 20 هجرية، وإنشاء مدينة الفسطاط كأول عاصمة إسلامية فى إفريقيا، ثم تطور العواصم مع العسكر العباسية والقطائع الطولونية التى كون مجموع هذه المدن الثلاثة عاصمة مصر الاقتصادية غداة تأسيس الفاطمية لمدينة القاهرة أول عاصمة ذات أسوار وأبواب فى مصر الإسلامية، والتى منحت اسمها بعد ذلك لمجموع عواصم مصر الإسلامية. وأضاف الدكتور أيمن فؤاد، يأتى هذا الكتاب كرؤية معاصرة لمفهوم الخطط الذى بدأ بمصر الإسلامية منذ القرن الثالث الهجرى، وبلغ ذروته مع كتاب المقريزى الرائد "المواعظ والاعتبار فى ذكر الخطط والآثار" ثم بعد ذلك مع كتاب وصف مصر لعلماء الحملة الفرنسية الذى مثل تصور الخطط بعين أجنبية، وكذلك كتاب الخطط التوفيقية الجديد لـ"على باشا مبارك". وأوضح الدكتور أيمن فؤاد، أن ما يميز الكتاب الجديد إضافة إلى اعتماد جميع هذه المصادر وجمع الأوقاف والوثائق، اعتماده على الوصف المرئى الذى قام به المستشرقون فى عهد محمد على قبل اختراع التصوير، مع عقد مقارنة بينها وبين الوضع الراهن لهذه المبانى. وتابع الدكتور أيمن فؤاد، كما زود الكتاب بأكثر من 500 صورة حديثة توضح المعالم الأثرية للقاهرة منذ العصر الطولونى، وحتى القاهرة الحديثة فى منتصف القرن العشرين بالإضافة إلى سلسلة من الخرائط التفصيلية التى توضح آثار القاهرة الإسلامية، وأيضاً خريطة ماتيو بجانو وهى أول خريطة ترُسل للقاهرة فى عصر السلطان المملوكى قايتباى، وخريطة وصف مصر التى تعد الأساس الذى رسمت عليه خرائط القاهرة التى نشرت فى وصف مصر، وكذلك خريطة جراند بك للقاهرة فى عصر الخديوى إسماعيل 1874م.
