آرثر كيستلر مؤلف هذا الكتاب أديب موسوعي الثقافة قبلته إنجلترا لاجئاً قبيل الحرب العالمية الثانية وصار من كتابها المشهورين وهو يهودي من أب مجري وأم نمساوية، كتب آرثر العديد من المؤلفات الأدبية والتاريخية... ومن أشهرها على الإطلاق كتابه الذين بين أيدينا "القبيلة الثالثة عشرة ويهود اليوم" الذي يدون فيه دراسة تاريخية عميقة تدور حول دولة الخزر اليهودية التي ظهرت في العصور الوسطى، وما خلفته من أثر على العالم المعاصر، وعلاقتها بيهود اليوم، وقد بلغت هذه الدولة أوج مجدها في الفترة الممتدة من القرن السابع إلى القرن العاشر الميلادي حيث امتدت جدودها وقتئذ من البحر الأسود إلى بحر قزوين ومن القوقاز إلى الفولجا، هذا وقد لعبت دولة الخزر دوراً هاماً في السياسة الدولية بحكم موقعها بين قوتين عظمتين الإمبراطورية البيزنطية المسيحية والإمبراطورية العربية الإسلامية، مختارتاً اليهودية ديانة لها، هذا ما يتعرض إليه المؤلف في القسم الأول من كتابه، أما القسم الثاني فيوضح فيه اثر الخزر في تكوين اليهود المعاصرين، خلاصة ما ينتهي إليه أن غالبية اليهود الحاليين ليسوا من أصل آسيوي، بل أنهم ينحدرون من الخزر القبيلة الثالثة عشرة، الذين انتشرت ذريتهم من كثير من دول شرق أوربا وخاصة بولندة والمجر... واللافت في هذا الكتاب حرص مؤلفه على تنويع مصادر معلوماته التي استقى منها مادة بحثه، فهي إما مصادر أصيلة عربية وبيزنطية وروسية، وإما أبحاث مؤرخين حديثين وقدماء.
