اعتقد المسلمون منذ فجر الرسالة الإسلامية وإلى اليوم بصحّة ما بشّر به النبيُّ الأعظم صلّى الله عليه وآله من ظهور رجُل من أهل بيته عليهم السلام في آخر الزمان - يسمى المهدي - يملأ الأرض قسطاً وعدلاً كما مُلئت ظلماً وجوراً.
وعلى ذلك كان ترقّب المؤمنين وإنتظارهم مهدي أهل البيت عليهم السلام قرناً فقرناً، ولم يشذّ عنهم إلا شرذمة قليلة من دعاة التجديد والتحضُّر، نتيجةً لتأثرهم بالدراسات والبحوث الإستشراقية غير الموضوعية، من أمثال ما كتبه المستشرق المجري فان فلوتن Gerolf Van Vloeten (1866- 1903م)، والمستشرق البريطاني دونالدسن Dwight M.Donaldson (1884- 1976م)، والمستشرق اليهودي المجري جولدزيهر Ignac Goldziher (1850- 1921م)، وغيرهم من المستشرقين الذين حاولوا – بتطرفهم المعهود في التحليل والإستنتاج بخصوص ما يتّصل بعقائد المسلمين - إنكار ظهور المهدي عليه السلام في آخر الزمان.
وقد يكون بعض من اغترّ بمناهجهم حسن النيّة في الدعوة إلى التجديد في فهم القضايا الإسلامية، ومحاولة إبراز توافقها وإنسجامها مع المفاهيم الحضارية التي فرضتها المدنية المعاصرة، فرأى أنَّ في إنكار فكرة ظهور المهدي عليه السلام ردّاً حاسماً على الدعوات الصلبية – المقنّعة بقناع الإستشراق – التي استهدفت الإسلام فصوَّرته – ببحوثها وكتاباتها – آلة جامدة لا تنبض بالحياة.
