مؤلف كتاب حكمة الإشراق الذي شرحه الفيلسوف شمس الدين الشهرزوري في كتاب شرح حكمة الإشراق الذي نحن بصدد تحقيقه، هو الحكيم الإشراقي الحلبي أبو الفتوح يحيى بن حبش بن أميرك الملقب بشهاب الدين السهروردي المقتول، وقد تواترت هذه التسمية عن جمهور المؤرخين الذين ينزعون منزع أهل السنة ويعدون آراء السهروردي مروقًا عن العقائد الصحيحة للسلف الصالح، أما تلامذة الشيخ وأتباعه فإنهم قد اعتبروه شهيدًا للفكر وللعقيدة الإشراقية ولذلك فإنهم يضيفون إلى اسمه كلمة "شهيد" بدل وصفه بأنه "مقتول".
ولا يجب أن نخلط بين السهروردي الإشراقي وغيره ممن تسموا بهذا الاسم من الفقهاء الصوفية فمنهم: أبو النجيب عبد القادر عبد الله بن عمويه الفقيه الصوفي الملقب بضياء الدين السهروردي المتوفى في بغداد سنة 563هـ. ثم صاحب "عوارف المعارف" المسمى أبو حفص عمر بن محمد بن عبد الله بن محمد ابن عمويه الصوفي والفقيه الشافعي المتوفى سنة 633هـ.
وإذا كانت مؤلفات السهروردي لا تخضع لأي تصنيف منهجية نظرًا لتداخلها ولظروف تأليفها حيث إن الشيخ نفسه يذكر أنه كان أثناء كتابه حكمة الإشراق يحرر رسالة أو كتابًا آخر ويعود لمتابعة تحرير كتاب حكمة الإشراق.
إذا كانت هذه المؤلفات تستعصى على التصنيف فيجب أن نحلل أقوال الشيخ نفسه التي توضح لنا كيف يمكن متابعة قراءة كتبه وهذا ما نسميه هنا بالتصنيف التعليمي، ما دام المؤلف يهدف إلى غاية تعليمية من تحرير كتبه، والواقع أن السهروردي يرتب للقارئ منهجًا ينصحه بأن يلتزمه حتى يخرج بالفائدة المرجوة.
والقارئ المستفيد في نظر "الشيخ" هو المريد السالك الذي يريد أن ينخرط في سلك الطريق الشراقي مع "إخوان التجريد".
فهو ينصحه بالبدء بقراءة "التلويحات" ثم المقاومات وأن يقرأ المطارحات قبل حكمة الإشراق وأن تكون قراءة حكمة الإشراق تحت إشراف معلم.
