ظهر في نهاية القرن السابق وبداية القرن الحالي اتجاه قوى لدى علماء النفس يدعو إلى الاهتمام بالجوانب الإيجابية لعلم النفس Positive Psychology, والذي يعني التركيز على الجوانب الإيجابية في الإنسان والاهتمام بتنميتها بدلاً من التركيز على الجوانب المرضية فقط، كما شهدت الفترة الأخيرة اهتماماً ملحوظاً بدراسات الذكاء الوجداني وذلك على اعتبار أنه يمثل بعداً أساسياً في تكوين الشخصية، وبدأت في المقالات الأكاديمية حيث اجتذب هذا المفهوم أهميته كعامل للتنبؤ بالنجاح.
يعرف جولمان Goleman الذكاء الوجداني (1998: 26 - 32) بأنه القدرة على إدراك الفرد لمشاعر الآخرين وتوظيف هذه المشاعر في اتخاذ القرارات المناسبة في الحياة وكذلك القدرة على التعامل مع الضغوط والتحكم في الانفعالات والتعاطف مع الآخرين، وقدم جولمان نموذجاً للذكاء الوجداني يتضمن عدداً من الكفاءات الشخصية والاجتماعية وفي ضوء أبعاد نموذج جولمان تم إعداد مقياس للذكاء الوجداني نظراً لشموله لمجموعة من القدرات العقلية والمهارات الوجدانية التي لها الأثر الإيجابي في حياة الأفراد النفسية وفي قدرتهم على الثقة بالنفس وصولاً للصحة النفسية.
وقد احتوى هذا الكتاب على هذا المقياس وجاء فيه: (نموذج جولمان للذكاء الوجداني، مفهوم الذكاء الوجداني، أبعاد الذكاء الوجداني، تعليمات الاختبار، صدق الاختبار، ثبات الاختبار، اختبار الذكاء الوجداني للمراهقين).
