منذ فترة شغلت بتتبع أشعار أبي عبد الرحمن العطوي، فأمضيت النية على أن أجمع أشعاره كلها، فكابدت فيها وعانيت، ولكني أخذت في معالجة هذا العمل، وطفت أقلب النظر في بطون المصادر، وأعيد الكرة خطرة بعد خطرة، وكلما أمنعت النظر ما بين جمع وتصحيح، وقراءة وتنقيح، وتجلية من الرزل القبيح، بدا لي أكثر فأكثر.
وبين بطون الكتب التي يتوه فيها التيه، بذلت عصارة النفس وماء العين، لأصنع صنيعاً أعتز به، وتشملني به غبطة، وتكمل سعادتي حينما يتلقاه القارئ بالترحيب الصادق، والعاطفة الحارة، فلم يك مني إلا أن جمعت وصححت الأبيات التي بين يدي، وتناولتها بالثقل والتهذيب، ورتبتها، وصنفتها، ووثقتها، وبينت بحرها، وتحريت الدقة في الغزو من عدمه، فوجدتني بين خليط من المنشور والمطبوع، والمحقق والمخطوط، فجمعت له أشعاراً - أظنها - لم تطع عليها عين القارئ، تشكل - إلى حد بعيد - التضاريس النفسية، والاتجاهات العقائدية، كما تصلح أن تكون محط نظر لفهم منازعه وميوله.
