يعد فرنسوا رينيه دو شاتوبريان (1768-1848م) أحد أبرز رواد المدرسة الرومنطيقية في النصف الأول من القرن التاسع عشر، وقد كان رومانسيَاً على طريقته الخاصة، إنعكس ذلك على أدبه، فقد حمل قسمات الحقبة التي عاشها، فتعطش إلى جمال الشرق وسحره، وحلم بالعودة إلى الطبيعة والمصالحة معها ولكن قيام الثورة الفرنسية، والتي فتحت نارها على شاتو بريان من جميع الجهات، سمحت له بصياغة كل تجاربه المريرة في الحياة صياغة رسخت التقاليد الرومانسية في الأدب الفرنسي، فكتب موقفه من الثورة الفرنسية، مع مسحة دينية لا تخلو من التعصب.
في هذا الكتاب ثلاث نصوص روائية كتبها شاتو بريان خلال خمس سنوات من حياة الترجال التي عاشها في أرجاء العالم الجديد، ووراء جبال البيرنيه الفاصلة بين فرنسا وإسبانيا ورحلاته إلى الشرق التي خلفت شخصيات أتالا، ورنيه، وابن هامت وغيرها.
وفي هذه الروايات (أتالا، ورينيه، وآخر ملوك بني سراج) تتشابك ذكريات الكاتب بالعناصر الروائية المبتدعة، وربما الخيالية، التي عرفها في مغامراته ورحلاهه، التي أثبت من خلالها أنه رجل كل الأزمنة في الغرب والشرق معاً وهذا ما تجلى في آخر ملوك بين سراج التي يتحدث فيها عن ملوك غرناطة.
