يبدأ الكتاب بحقبة ثورات 1906-1918 التي تؤذن بنهاية السلطنة العثمانية وتنقسم إلى ثلاث حقبات تاريخية اعتبرت كل منها حقبة تحوّل في تاريخ الحركات السياسية والإسلاموية في الشرق الأوسط، وهذه الحقبات هي: 1906-1979، 1979-1991، 1991 حتى منتصف العقد الأول من الألفية الثالثة. تتمحور كل حقبة، وكل جزء من الكتاب يقابلها، حول أحداث العنف البارزة والشخصيات المؤثرة واللحظات التاريخية التي يتم وصفها وتحليلها من أجل فهم أشكال العنف التي تجلّت فيها. ونجول في هذه الحقبات في أرجاء الشرق الأوسط الكبير من تركيا إلى العراق ولبنان وسوريا وفلسطين ومصر وصولاً إلى أفغانستان.
