نشير في بادئ الأمر، إلى أننا لن نستطيع فهم اتجاهات كل من الإدارة والعمال إذا لم ننظر إليهما في سياقهما التاريخي، وإذا لم ندرك أن كثيراً مما نعتبره راجع إلى "الطبيعة الإنسانية" إنما هو في الحقيقة نتاج خالص لثقافة معينة في مرحلة معينة من تطورها. فالإعتقاد بأن العمل ضرورة كريهة، وأن الفرد مهتم بنفسه أساساً ، وكسول أساساً، وتنافسي أساساً، وأن المجتمع يحتوي على كتلة من الأفراد الغير منظمين، كل في عراك مع الأخر، وأن الجسم الإنساني إنما هو آلة يرتبط بها العقل بشكل ما، وأن الخوف من الضياع هو الباع السلبي الأساسي والمال هو الباعث السلبي الأساسي كما أنه الباعث الإيجابي الأساسي، كل هذه المعتقدات إنما هي نتاج نمط معين من المجتمع في مرحلة معينة من تطورهز فهي لا تقبل سمات إنسانية أساسية، وحتى إذا اصبحت أكثر تقبلاً بشكل عامخ، فهي لا تنطبق حقيقة إلا على قلة قليلة من أعضاء المجتمع الصناعي.
