أمست الحاجة ملحة في العالم الإسلامي وخاصة في الوقت الحالي؛ لدراسة تاريخ الجماعات اليهودية التي عاشت بين الشعوب الإسلامية في مختلف دول العالم الإسلامي شرقه وغربه، ومرد هذه الحاجة الماسة إغفال الباحثين العرب والمسلمين التحري عن دور اليهود الحقيقي، وتركهم ذلك الميدان خاليًا أما الباحثين اليهود الذين لم يهدفوا إلى إظهار الحقيقة ولم يحكموا الموضوعية ومنهجية البحث في كتاباتهم، وإنما عمدوا إلى التحريف تحت مسمى التفسير، وجعلوا المذهب والعقيدة طاغية على المنهج لتحقيق مأرب أرادوه.
يهدف الكتاب إلى محاولة إبراز الدور اليهودي داخل المجتمع المغربي في عهد بني زيرى على مدى قرنين من الزمان وكيفية احتضان المغاربة للطائفة اليهودية وطريقة تعاملهم معها انطلاقًا من النصوص الشرعية، وإلقاء الضوء على المكانة التي احتلها اليهود في كنف المجتمع الإسلامي المغربي، والنتائج الناجمة عن ذلك، حيث تناول الكتاب عبر فصوله العديد من مظاهر الحياة داخل المجتمع اليهودي فتناول الحياة الاقتصادية لليهود في المغربين الأدنى والأوسط في عهد زيرى حيث ركز على دور اليهود في المهن والحرب التي برعوا فيها مثل حرفة صناعة الذهب والفضة وغزل ونسج الحرير ودباغة الجلود وكذلك العمل بالتجارة، كما تناول كذلك الحياة الاجتماعية في نفس العهد من خلال رصد أماكن سكن اليهود بمدن المغربين الأدنى والأوسط ورصد العادات والتقاليد اليهودية وموقفهم من غير اليهود وكذلك مواضيع كالدور الاجتماعي لليهود، الزواج والأسرة، المرأة، كما عرض الكتاب لمظاهر الحياة الدينية وبخاصة فرقتي الربانيين والقرائين بما في ذلك مظاهر احتفالاتهم بأعيادهم، كما خصص جانب من الكتاب لعرض الحياة الثقافية والفكرية لليهود بما في ذلك من رصد للإبداع الأدبي والعلوم العقلية والعلوم النقلية التي تأثرت بعلوم المسلمين حيث نستطيع أن نلمس أثر للغة العربية على كافة الدراسات العبرية.
