هذا الكتاب هو كتاب مهم لمؤرخ من جيل الرواد هو المؤرخ الكبير الدكتور أحمد الحتة الذي يعد من أبرز تلاميذ الأستاذ محمد شفيق غربال مؤسس المدرسة التاريخية المصرية بمنهجهاالحديث، والدكتور أحمد الحتة أول وأبرز من تخصصوا في تاريخ الزراعة المصرية، فحصل على درجة الماجستير سنة 1934 في موضوع "الفلاح المصري في عهد محمد علي"، ونال درجة الدكتوراه تحت إشراف أستاذه "غربال" أيضاً عام1946 في موضوع "تطور الزراعة المصرية في النصف الأول من القرن التاسع عشر" وكانت هي الأساس الذي بني عليه الكتاب الذي بين يدي القارئ الكريم، والذي تناول فيه تجربة الإصلاح الإقتصادي في عصر محمد علي باشا (1805-1848) مركزاً على مجال الزراعة والري، وملكية الأراضي الزراعية، حيث إن الزراعة والأرض الزراعية هي مفتاح الإقتصاد المصري، ومجمل القول إن هذا الكتاب ليس فقط أول كتاب علمي عن تاريخ الزراعة المصرية في عهد محمد علي، بل هو أهم الكتب التي صدرت في هذا المجال وكل الأعمال العلمية التي صدرت بعده لم تستطع ان تنازعه في تلك المكانة، ومن هنا يأتي إهتمامنا بإعادة نشر هذا العمل.
