يتناول موضوع الدراسة "الأساطير والخرافات في كتابات الرحالة العرب والمسلمين المشارقة" منذ قيام الدولة العباسية وحتى سقوطها. وتأتي أهميتها لقيامها بتشخيص مدلولات الأساطير، والبحث لمعرفة دوافع سردها في تلك الكتب بإتباع المنهج العلمي الخاضع للنقد والتحليل، لاسيما أن البحث في هذه الكتابات يُعد نافذة واسعة يمكن من خلالها الاطلاع على كثير من الحقائق العلمية والمعلومات الجغرافية والوثائق التاريخية، ولا ندعي أن كل ما ذكر من أساطير وخرافات في كتابات الرحالة له دلالات واضحة وحقائق نسبية، بل هناك كثير منها ورد عن طريق خيال الرحالة وأوهامه وتصديقهِ بما نقل إليه من هذا القبيل أو ذاك. لذلك جاءت هذه الدراسة لمعالجة جانب الأساطير والخرافات الذي لازم هذا التنوع والشمول في الرحلة، وإكمال ما قد غفلت عنه الدراسات مع قيمتها العلمية.
