العثمانيون، أسرة حاكمة مسلمة، تمثل دولتهم آخر دول الإسلام الكبرى عرفوا الإسلام على مذاهب أهل السنة والجماعة، عرفوه جهادًا في سبيل الله، فبلغوا به بلادًا لم تبلغها من أي الدول المسلمة قبلهم.. وعرفوه حبًا لرسوله "صلى الله عليه وسلم"، وتوقيرًا لآل بيته وصحابته والخلفاء الراشدين، فكانت هداياهم للحرمين الشريفين ولأهله وساداته تعبيرًا عن هذا الحب.. جعلوا للحرمين الشريفين وأهله نصيبًا من أموالهم، هدية منهم، عرفت باسم الصرة، وكان بايزيد الأول (1389 - 1402) أول من أرسل هذه الهدية من سلاطين العثمانيين، قبل أن يمن الله عليهم ويشرفهم بخدمة هذه البقاع المشرفة الطاهرة، بأكثر من مائة عام ونيف، إذ كان الحرمان الشريفان آنذاك في كنف الدولة المملوكية الحاكمة في مصر والشام.
ثم كان الفتح العثماني للشام ومصر عام 1516 - 1517م، إيذانا بانتقال الحرمين الشريفين إلى كنف الدولة العثمانية، إذ أرسل شريف مكة الشريف "أبو نمي" ولده الشريف محمد إلى السلطان سليم الأول أثناء مقامه في القاهرة، ليعلن مبايعته له، ويسلمه مفتاح الكعبة المشرفة، رمزًا لانتقال خدمة الحرمين الشريفين وأهلهما إلى العثمانيين، وهذاالكتاب الذي بين أيدينا، يظهر لنا جانبًا من خدمات العثمانيين للحرمين الشريفين، ويقدم تأريخًا موجزًا لإرسال الكسوة الشريفة والصرة والمحمل في العهد العثماني، فضلًا عن معلومات جغرافية وتاريخية لها أهميتها في معرفة منازل طرق الحج، والقبائل التي تقطن الحجاز وأعدادهم وأحوال الحجاز عامة، وفي العهد العثماني على وجه الخصوص.
