عرفت حركة النقد الروائي العربي تطوراً سريعاً منذ السبعينيات لتصبح في نهاية التسعينيات وبداية القرن الواحد والعشرين ظاهرة واضحة ومنتشرة لدرجة لا يمكن معها حصر أو تحديد أو توثيق الدراسات والكتب والأبحاث المنجزة، وإنطلاقاً من هذا المعطى الأساسي جاء موضوع الكتاب ليتناول بشكل دقيق مكونات مناهج النقد الادبي في مجال السرد، او ما اصطلح على تسميته بالنقد الجديد.
ومن منطلق الدراسة المقارنة لتلقي أفكار وطروحات النقد الجديد يكتسي الموضوع أهميته، لكون الدراسات المتكاملة في هذا الشأن قليلةً جداً بالمقارنة مع الكم الهائل من الأبحاث والدراسات المنجزة.
وقد جاءت الدراسة في ثلاثة فصول، يتناول كل فصل منها منهجاً واحداً بالحديث، أما في الفصل الأول فقد تناول المؤلف بالعرض أهم الأفكار والأطروحات المنهجية التي قدمها ممثلو التيار البنيوي في النقد الجديد الذي تناول النصوص السردية بالدراسة، ووضع الجهاز المفاهيمي المتكامل للنظرية البنيوية للسرد، وهم: كلود ليفي شتراوس، رولان بارت، وتزفيتان تودوروف، وجيرار جينيت، وكلود بريمون.
أما في الفصل الثاني فعرض المؤلف للنقد النفسي كما قدمه شارل مورون، الذي اقترح مصطلح النقد الإجتماعي Sociocritique بديلاً لدراسات التحليل النفسي، كما تناول بالعرض الأسس المنهجية لجاك لاكان حول اللاوعي وعلاقته باللغة، كما تناول بالحديث مفهوم الرواية العائلية واللاوعي لدى مارت روبير، وفي نهاية الفصل قدم أفكار جون بلمان نويل المتعلقة بلاوعي النص، وأهمية دور القارئ في إنتاجية النص الأدبي.
أما النص الثالث فقد خصصه للحديث عن المكون الثالث، وهو النقد البنيوي كما قدمه لوسيان غولدمان، والمفاهيم الأساسية لهذا التوجه الذي يعد تنويعاً بنيوياً للنقد الإجتماعي الكلاسيكي.
