الإنسان والموسيقى صنوان لا يفترقان، فتطور أحدهما متلازم مع تطور الآخر لأن الموسيقى تلعب دوراً رائداً في تنمية المجتمعات الإنسانية وتسامي أذواقها وشفافيتها، كما نصقل خلقها وتهذب أخلاقها من هذا المنطلق كان لا بد للمركز التربوي والإنماء من أن يقوم بنشر أمهات الكتب وخاصة معجم المصطلحات الموسيقية الذي وضعه المستشرق الأمريكي "جس ولمان" وقام بمراجعته فريق من الاختصاصين اللبنانيين في الحقل الفني نظراً لجليل الفائدة التي يوفرها للعاملين في هذا المضمار.
هذا ويعتبر هذا المعجم مرجعاً مهماً إن لم نقل حيوياً في حقل الموسيقى إذ لا مثيل له في العالم العربي حتى الآن وقد وضعت مصطلحاته في خمس لغات حيّة هي: العربية والفرنسية والإنكليزية والألمانية والإيطالية. وهو يتضمن ما يزيد على 5000 مادة مترجمة إلى اللغة العربية من اللغات الإنكليزية والفرنسية والألمانية والإيطالية وبالإضافة إلى القليل من اللاتينية القديمة.
وكل هذه المواد مصطلحات مستعملة بكثيرة في الكتب الدراسية الموسيقية وعلى المدونات من القطع والمعزوفات في اللغات المذكورة. كما وزود القاموس بصورة لأصناف الآلات الموسيقية، مما يزيد في قوة التوضيح، وبرموز موسيقية تساعد على الفهم أما هدف هذا المعجم فهو سد الحاجة إلى معجم شامل وموحد في اللغة العربية لمصطلحات الموسيقى الغربية. والإسهام في توحيد ترجمة المصطلحات الموسيقية الغربية خصوصاً وأنه بني على فهم صحيح ودقيق لمعنى المصطلح أي راعي دفه المفهوم الأجنبي ليتساوى المصطلح العربي مع صحة المفهوم، ولم يهمل المصطلحات التي ترجمها مجمع اللغة العربية في القاهرة.
