في بداية القرن العشرين، قدمت ماريا مونتيسوري، وهي طبيبة ممارسة، واستاذة علم الانسان بجامعة روما، فكرة مذهلة إلى العالم الاكاديمى، فقد أكدت أن الطفل البشري يولد ككائن غير مكتمل مهمته الفريدة أن يكمل تكوينه، ويستغرق تكوين نفس الانسان لنفسه كل الفترة من الطفولة غلى مرحلة البلوغ المبكرة: من الميلاد إلى سن 24 سنة، كانت تلك فكرة ثورية اقتادت حتماً إلى استنتاج مدهش ىخر، وهو أن التعليم نفسه سجب أن يبدأ عند ميلاد الطفل، وأكثر من ذلك، أن التعليم نفسه يجب أن يعاد تصوره، فلم يعد التركيز ينصب على حسب المعرفة في الطفل المجهز بمخ جاهز مسبقاً، فلم يكن العقل معداً مسبقاً بالمرة، أن التعليم يجب أن يساعد الاطفال أنهم يصنعوا عقولهم حتى يتم الوصول إلى النضوج في الرابعة والعشرون من العمر.
