هذا الكتاب هو نموذج من كتب (محتسب العلماء والأولياء) الشيخ أحمد زرّوق، وقد بينَ القصدَ منه في مقدمته الموجزة البليغة قائلاً: "وبعدُ: فالقصدُ من هذا الكتاب المختصر وفصوله:
1-تمهيدُ قواعد التصوّف وأصوله، على وجهٍ يجمع بين الشريعةٍ والحقيقةٍ، ويصِلُ الأصولَ والفقهَ بالطريقةِ".
2-ضبط علمَ التصوّف، وحقّق مسائلَه، وأوضَح معانيه، ونفى غلطَ وخُبْثَ مدّعيه، بقواعدَ علميةٍ مهمةٍ، استخرجها الشيخُ من أصولها، وأوضحَها بفروعها، وربطَها بجذورِها الشرعية: "الكتاب والسنّة".
3-هو كتابُ علمٍ وعملٍ، معزّزاً بالعقل، الذي هو خيرُ آلةٍ وهَبَها اللهُ للإنسانِ، وكرّمه بها، وبه نصلُ إلى معرفةِ اللهِ على أساس علميٍّ صحيحٍ، ثم محبتِه وصدقٍ التوجّه إليه، دونَ إلتواءٍ ولا كبيرٍ عناءٍ.
4-ربط الحقيقة بالشريعة، التي هي أساسٌ لكلٍّ حقيقةٍ، فأقامَ الحُجةَ، وأظهرَ المحجَّةَ، وأبانَ الحقَّ أبلجَ لأهلِه، وأزهق الباطلَ في محلّه، عملاً بقول أبي سليمان الداراني: "إنّها لتقعُ النكتةُ من كلام القومِ في قلبي أياماً، فأقول: لا أقبلكِ إلاّ بشاهدي عدلٍ: الكتابِ والسنَّةِ".
وصفَ الشيخ أحمد بابا التنبكتي هذا الكتاب بأنه: "غايةٌ في الحُسْن والنُّبل" لأنه يُصْلِحُ واقعَ الدُّعاةِ، ويوجِّهُ المتصوّفين إلى الطريق المستقيم، بقواعدَ علميةٍ صحيحةٍ صادرةٍ عن إمامٍ عالمٍ حجةٍ خبيرٍ.
