عمد المؤلف إلى كتاب الهيثمي موارد الظمآن إلى زوائد ابن حبان الذي أخرج فيه ما هو على الصحيحين زائد، فكان أن تمم المؤلف جمع أحاديث الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم والتي أغفل الهيثمي عن جمعها، كما جهد على توضيح ما جاء في هذه الأحاديث من أحكام، حاذفاً المكرر من هذه الأحاديث فكان هذا الكتاب الذي جعله تحت عنوان "تشنيف الآذان بسماع الزائد على السنة عند ابن حبان".
