عمان من أقدم الحضارات في الجزيرة العربية، التي كانت لها علاقات مع الحضارات القديمة في بلاد ما بين النهرين مثل السومريين والأكاديين وغيرهم، وكذلك لهم علاقة مع الفراعنة، ويقال أن الفينيقيين أصلهم أو لهم علاقة بعمان.
وقد امتد مُلك عمان في بعض الأحيان من الحيرة إلى بلاد المهرة في الجنوب، وأحياناً من البحرين حتى شرق أفريقيا، وأحياناً تزيد وتنقص الرقعة الجغرافية، وفي بعض الفترات تكون فترات إمامة إباضية، التي تُعتبر إمتداد للخلافة الراشدة، وأحياناً ملكية أو سلطنة، وأحياناً تتقسم بين عدة حكام، من أئمة وملوك وأمراء أو شيوخ قبائل.
التاريخ مهم جداً فبه نأخذ العِبر، ونعرف الخطأ من الصواب، وبه تقتدي بالعلماء والأئمة العادلين، فقد ذكر الحق سبحانه وتعالى في كتابه المجيد الكثير عن الأمم السابقة، لأخذ العبرة والإقتداء بالرسل والأنبياء عليهم الصلاة والسلام.
وقد اختزل المؤلف في هذا الكتاب تاريخ عمان، بطريقة مبتكرة حديثة، وركز على أنساب الحكام، منذ مالك بن فهم الأزدي حتى الوقت الحاضر، مع ذكر تراجم لكل حاكم.
