كان الزهر الشريف- وسيظل- معهداً خالداً في انتفاع أبناء المسلمين من مشارق الأرض ومغاربها بما يبصرهم في حياتهم الدينية والدنيوية، وشير الكتاب إلى المكانة السامية للأزهر باعتباره صانعاً للتاريخ في حقب كثيرة، وأباً لكثير من، الثورات التي نشبت في مصر ومعظم البلاد العربية والإسلامية، ومصدراً للمقاومة ضد الغزو والظلم والطغيان على مر العصور، حيث ثار الزهر الشريف على المماليك والفرنسيين والإنجليز وعلى القصر والإقطاعيين والرجعيين، كما شهد في حقب أخرى ثورات من أجل نفسه في سبيل إصلاح طرائق التعليم ومحاربة الجمود في مناهجه، ويعرج الكتاب إلى الدور البارز الذي قام به الأزهر في حفظ الدين اللغة والمعرفة، ونشر مبادئ الدين السمحة ونبذ التعصب كما يرصد المواقف المشرفة لبعض شيوخ الأزهر الأجلاء وجهادهم ضد القوات الغاشمة وعلى رأسهم: الشيخ العز بن عبد السلام، والإمام محمد عبده، والشيح حسن الجبرتي، وغيرهم.
