من المهم جدا أن نجعل من النظرية الدلالية معاصرة لنفسها، أن نفهمها في الحدود التاريخية التي أنتجتها والظروف المعرفية والثقافية التي تشكلت في حضنها، لنجعلها معاصرة لنا وأن نستوعبها من منطلق الفهم المعاصر للدلالة ولقوانين تطورها، وليس من زاوية أقدميتها، و لا نرى في ذلك تأزما في الوعي اللساني، بل أرى أن أي نظرية دلالية يجب أن تتطور وفق مسار يحفظ لها إمكانية إعادة بناء نفسها، و إعادة البناء هنا يقتضي حصر التفكير بضوابط الأنساق المعرفية التي تُحكم بسيرورات التطور والنمو، ونحن نعلم مسبقا أن تاريخ البحث الدلالي بمفهومه اللّساني قصير جدا مقارنة مع تاريخ البحث اللّساني بشكل عام، إلا أن قصرها جاء متوافقا مع المقاربات التي فرضت نفسها على البحث اللساني إذ تجاوزت الوصف الصّوري في اللسانيات الحديثة إلى الوصف المعرفي الذي يستهدف مناقشة قضايا الفكر والتصور والإدراك والتمثل. فكان من اللازم أن نعيد طرح الأسئلة الصحيحة حول مبادئ التأليف التي تربط الدلالة بالتركيب
